Okinawa, Japan

Nestled in the vibrant waters of the East China Sea, Okinawa is Japan’s tropical gem, boasting a unique history and a culture that’s distinctly its own. Originally inhabited by the Ryukyu Kingdom, which thrived from the 15th to the 19th centuries, Okinawa was a hub for trade and cultural exchange between Japan, China, and Southeast Asia. This rich history is evident in the colorful shisa (guardian lion-dog) statues that dot the landscape, as well as in the traditional Ryukyu dance and music that still resonate through the islands today.

Okinawa’s culture is a delightful mix of influences, offering visitors a taste of both Japanese and indigenous traditions. The islands are famous for their vibrant festivals, delicious cuisine (think savory Okinawa soba and refreshing goya champuru), and a laid-back lifestyle that encourages relaxation and connection with nature. The locals are known for their hospitality, and you might find yourself joining in a lively eisa dance or enjoying a sunset with a cold glass of awamori, a locally distilled spirit. With its lush landscapes and stunning beaches, it’s no wonder Okinawa has been nicknamed the “Hawaii of Japan.”

Beyond its cultural allure, Okinawa is also known for its diverse industries, from agriculture to tourism. The islands are a significant producer of tropical fruits like mangoes and pineapples, along with the famous Okinawan sweet potatoes. As a hub for marine activities, the surrounding coral reefs attract snorkelers and divers from around the world, showcasing the incredible biodiversity of the region. Whether you’re exploring ancient castles, savoring local delicacies, or lounging on pristine beaches, Okinawa offers a delightful blend of adventure and relaxation, making it a must-visit destination for any traveler. We stayed on Tokashiki Island, it was blissfully low-key, and relaxing. We spent our days wakeboarding, hiking trails to viewpoints, and enjoying sunset paddle boarding.

After a few days on Tokashiki, we headed to the main island and checked out the aquarium before going to our AirBNB.

It was pretty awesome to see a whale shark eating.

This AirBNB was an awesome mix of rustic and modern.

Met a really friendly husband, wife, and cat family of ceramic artists.

Great sunset view at Cape Manzamo.

I had a great time in Okinawa and definitely recommend it.
